Desperate to catch a fish, I'm about to poach at the Pequest Trout Hatchery, Warren County NJ

Desperate to catch a fish,

I'm about to poach at the Pequest Trout Hatchery, Warren County NJ

I know they're in there because I've seen total strangers pull trout from the Pohatcong Creek right at my front yard. Even though it isn't being stocked right now, the darn things ARE in that water at my home!

My buddy Jim Heebner at The Owl's Nest showed me which end of the pole to point at the water - plus sells me squirmy worms genetically engineered to attract the very biggest trout. Well, Jim never mentioned the DNA business but I'm confident his bait is magical and not just pulled from the ground...

Almost to the extreme of buying a silly hat and a camo vest, I wanted to see what these fish looked like in the water. Perhaps those things that look like sticks aren't the best goal. A shame because I have am now a top stick reeler-inner.... So, the other day I popped into Warren County's Pequest Trout Hatchery and Natural Resource Education Center between real estate appointments. I shan't wear high heels there again, however.

I did learn that the Pequest Trout Hatchery has a variety of free programs geared for all ages. Perhaps Family Fishing Basics would be a great idea for this novice trout fisherwoman! Yeah, I'll sign up as long as they let me try catching that big one in the fountain!  Otherwise, perhaps a late night outing?

Nah, the bail will cost more than a trout dinner is worth!

Irene, specially engineered worms?  Now I think I really have heard it all!

Irene, you are lucky to have trout so close, we have big ugly bass down here!

Irene, I have so many childhood memories of visiting fish hatcheries.  Thanks for the memory!

But, Steve, are you two boys catching anything other than quality time together? Not that that isn't great, but a nibble or two would be nice as well!

Pat - Perhaps I shouldn't have kissed that Blarney Stone...

David - Trout proximity is proving meaningless for me.  If those ugly bass are trained to jump on a hook, I might just show up to fish with you!

Marchel - This was a first for me. I actually intend to return for a program, sans high heels.

Irene - love your video. Have you caught one yet?  this reminds me of growing up on my Grandfather's farm in bothell, WA, above a trout farm.  My brothers and i would sneak in below the hatchery where the escaped fish could be found.  ALWAYS fish just waiting to be caught.  My mistake was going there once alone when I was 7 AND ACTUALLY CATCHING A FISH.  I loved to catch them, clean them and eat them, but couldn't, and still cant, touch them when they are alive.  so try being 7 and having a wiggly fish that needs to be unhooked, but you can't touch it.  It was traumatic, to say the least. That's when I learned that crying hysterically doesn't solve anything.

thanks for your posting.

Engineered worms...taking advantage of these creatures.  It is easier to use a net and wear a mask and run like heck and... What was that fine?

Sally - I'll keep trying! Love your story and am glad to jog some childhood memories.

Gary - You hold the flashlight, I'll get the net and we'll have a trout feast that night.

Irene... You'll catch one! Fishing a fun thing to do outside in the summer. Good luck!

But I still bet poaching at a hatchery would have a better yield, Carra!

Liz,

If I thought it would get a fish on my hook, I'd try it in an evening dress!

Irene  My husband  would give anything to have trout in front of our home.  I love this past and plan to hit the suggest post - it is very natural - thank you

Karen,

Because you hit the suggest button, Art is welcome to fish in my creek anytime! You would also be a treasured guest, even if you don't want to fish.

That would be so much fun Irene i agree high heels and fishing do not go hand in hand. lol

Grace,

Learning that the wardrobe is almost as important as the rod!

I don't have the patience for fishing, and I sure don't have the patience to sit in the slammer waiting for someone to bail me out! LOL

Jim,

Perhaps both would be much more interesting if you were wearing high heels! What an image...

Was this another one of those excursions with your nephews?  You always find the best places to hang out!

Posted by Sharon Tara New Hampshire Home Stager (Sharon Tara Transformations) about 1 month ago

Nope, Sharon, haven't had the kids there yet! But we are trying to schedule into one of the "Family Fishing Basic" sessions. I especially love inexpensive outings and this is free, if I don't count the cooler full of juice boxes and munchies.
