In 1878 on the site of his family's farmland in what was Deckertown NJ, Union General Hugh Judson Kilpatrick, a Civil War hero, staged a 4-day event for 40,000 Civil War veterans. It culminated in a 4,000 participant reenactment of a battle. A 2002 center-hall Colonial home for sale is located right on this historic property in what is now called Wantage - 87 Sherman Ridge Road.

According to Edward G. Longacre in a 1971 Civil War Times Illustrated Magazine, Kilpatrick's licentious nature caused several stirs! (I can't help it if I have a fondness for the bad boys...)
